Open Source Model

Checkmarq supports open source licensing by using and contributing to the open source community, and it's licenses, on regular bases. However, to get a tight and optimal functioning VBX product, several optimized libraries, applications and firmwares are used, which are bound to commercial, close source licenses. This makes the VBX-Series products not 100% open source compliant. In most cases this mixed model of open/closed source is more then sufficient to comply to default installations where open source compliance is needed for projects; in almost every 'open source' compliant installation, there are always parts that are bound to closed source, like network switches, routers, phone devices, fax devices, etc.

In selected cases a company, government body or institute, demands a fully 100% open source installation, instead of a mixed open/closed source installation. Checkmarq can deliver the VBX-Series installations 100% compliant with open source licensing model. Even the 'Carefree' monitoring functionality can be made compliant with open source licensing on the appliance end, and can install software phone and fax devices based on open source licensing. The functionality of the VBX-Series changes a little bit, due stripping of closed source, commercial libraries, but most parts can be replaced with open source licensed libraries and applications. In addition, open source based VBX-Series demand more intensive support due the nature of open source, where applications and libraries are made for a broad world, not specialized on specific hardware and/or functionality and applications and libraries can change on daily bases.

Only selected resellers are able to install VBX-Series in open source model configuration, and in most cases installation and support contracts will be made directly with Checkmarq, due the needed knowledge and more complex maintenance of the open source based appliances.
